The Michigan Mermaid is a fantastical creature like no other. She is the antithesis of the flirty, sparkling, pop-culture mermaid. She is closer kin to the discerning sharks of the ocean. Yet, she resides in fresh water, emerging from the steely gray body of water as the ice of Michigan Winter recedes. One can't be sure if she sleeps, if she lives, if she even has interest in such prosaic things. She resides somewhere amid land and water, part human, part creature, in between Winter and Spring, simultaneously unadorned and ethereal. She rests, preparing either to awaken or to be enveloped back into Lake Michigan.
